The glottis closes too tightly; the air gets stuck and the voice sounds squeezed and effortful.
In One Sentence
Glottal closure is too tight — the airflow gets pinched, and the voice sounds squeezed, tight, and effortful.
How to Read It
Watch the Airflow Balance (NAQ) chart. If the needle keeps sitting in the lower red "squeeze zone" (NAQ < 0.1), the glottis is pressed too tightly.
Note (register gating): when the student profile has the second passaggio filled in, this symptom is no longer judged above it (the third passaggio cannot physically squeeze — Justin 2026).
Why Does This Happen?
| Cause | Description |
|---|---|
| Extrinsic compensation | The folds can't close enough on their own, so the larynx "helps" by squeezing |
| Over-strong contraction | The two folds press together hard and pinch the airflow |
| Breath-holding habit | Sealing the glottis before onset, then forcing air through |
