The glottis is squeezed too tight, blocking airflow and making the voice tight and effortful.
In a Nutshell
The glottis closes too tightly, airflow is blocked, and the voice sounds tight, strained, and effortful.
How to Identify
Watch the Airflow Balance (NAQ) chart. If the indicator stays pinned in the lower red "pressed" zone (NAQ < 0.1), the glottis is closed too tight.
Why Does This Happen?
| Cause | Description |
|---|---|
| Extrinsic compensation | The vocal folds can't close efficiently on their own, so the larynx "helps" by squeezing |
| Excessive adduction | The two folds press together too hard, blocking airflow |
| Breath-holding habit | Closing the glottis before phonation, then forcing air through |
