Vocal Science Principle

Voice instability — the voice trembles and lacks steadiness, often due to insufficient breath support.

Detection criteria:

  • Jitter exceeds threshold, OR
  • Shimmer exceeds threshold
  • Minimum volume threshold must be met (low volume causes unreliable Jitter/Shimmer measurements)

    • Elevated jitter (pitch perturbation) and/or shimmer (amplitude perturbation) indicate the vocal folds are not vibrating in a stable, periodic pattern.
