GNE

Glottal Noise

The proportion of noise in the voice — an objective scale for breathiness.

The valleys between harmonics fill with noise specks: turbulence squeezing through an incomplete closure lands here — the higher the valley floor, the breathier the voice.

What it is

Glottal Noise Excitation. When the folds fail to close fully, air forces through the gap as turbulence, layering broadband noise onto the voice — GNE measures that noise fraction and is the objective readout of breathiness.

Where it comes from

It analyzes the noise floor beneath the harmonic structure: the more energy in the valleys between harmonics, the more noise has leaked in.

How to read it

High GNE = obvious breathiness (an airy or vocal-fry leaning); low GNE = solid closure. An occasional high value may just be the natural breathy release at a phrase ending; a sustained high reading throughout is a real closure problem.
