What Is Resonance?

Have you noticed that singing in the bathroom sounds better than in the bedroom? That's because the hard bathroom walls help your voice "resonate."

Resonance is the process of sound being amplified and shaped in a space. The raw sound from your vocal cords is actually quite weak — like a guitar string without a body. It's only after passing through your throat, mouth, and nasal cavities (your "resonating chambers") that it becomes the full, rich sound we hear.

Why Do Some Voices "Carry" Better?

The "brightness" and "projection" of a voice mainly depends on how concentrated the high-frequency energy is. Professional singers can be heard over an orchestra because their voice has an energy concentration around 2000-4000 Hz, known as the "singer's formant."

In simple terms, their vocal tract shape happens to focus sound energy at the frequencies where human ears are most sensitive.

How to Improve Resonance

Understanding Formants

The resonance you hear is actually the result of multiple "formants" stacking together. You don't need to memorize complex terminology — just know that larynx position affects the low-frequency depth of your sound, tongue position affects vowel clarity, and the overall shape of your vocal tract determines whether your voice has carrying power (the "singer's formant"). Improving resonance is essentially about coordinating these elements.

About "Mask Resonance"

Try this: hum on "mmm" and feel the vibration concentrated around your nose bridge and forehead area. That's "mask resonance."

However, be careful: mask resonance is just a physical sensation for reference. Don't chase the feeling of facial vibration too aggressively. If you deliberately change your vocal production to "send the sound into the mask," you may end up with excessive nasality or extrinsic muscle tension. Judge your sound by your ears, not by vibrations in your face.

Keep Your Larynx Stable

Larynx position affects the length and shape of your vocal tract. Too high makes the voice thin and tight; too low makes it muffled. The ideal is a relatively stable, low-to-neutral position.

Use Compression

Beyond adjusting your resonating chambers, vocal projection also depends on "compression" — the coordinated effort of the throat, pharynx, tongue, and other structures to focus sound energy. This is why some people's voices aren't loud but still "cut through."
