What Is Messa di Voce?

Messa di Voce (Italian for "placing the voice") is a classic vocal exercise where you sing a single note starting soft, gradually getting louder, then gradually getting softer again. Sounds simple, but it's one of the most challenging and rewarding exercises in vocal training.

Why Is It So Effective?

This exercise trains your vocal cords to maintain consistent quality across different volume levels. It requires:

  • Precise breath control: Smoothly increasing and decreasing air pressure
  • Stable cord closure: Keeping the cords working efficiently at all volumes
  • Consistent tone: The voice should sound "the same" whether soft or loud — just at different volumes
  • Many singers can sing loud or soft, but transitioning smoothly between the two reveals weaknesses in technique.

  • Tone collapse on soft: The voice becomes breathy and loses core when getting quiet
  • Strain on loud: The voice becomes harsh and tight when getting louder

    1. Choose a comfortable mid-range note

    2. Start as softly as you can while maintaining a clear tone

    3. Very gradually increase volume over 4-5 seconds

    4. Hold the loudest point briefly

    5. Very gradually decrease volume over 4-5 seconds

    6. End as softly as you began

    Start with easy notes and short durations. As you improve, extend the duration and try different pitches.
