What Is the Larynx?

The larynx is the bump at the front of your neck (more visible in men, commonly called the "Adam's apple"). Your vocal cords live inside it. The larynx's position directly affects the length and shape of your vocal tract, which changes your tone color.

How Does Larynx Position Affect Sound?

Try this simple experiment:

  • Swallow and feel your larynx rise — if you make sound now, it'll be thin and tight
  • Yawn and feel your larynx drop — make sound now, and it'll be deep and thick
  • A raised larynx shortens the vocal tract, making the voice brighter but prone to tension. A lowered larynx lengthens the tract, making the voice deeper but potentially muffled.

    The Ideal Larynx Position

    Many people think you should "push the larynx down" when singing. That's actually wrong. The ideal position is a relatively stable, low-to-neutral position — not forced down, but naturally held in a lower position by the larynx-depressing muscles.

    The larynx naturally moves with pitch: it rises slightly for high notes and drops slightly for low notes. That's normal. The problem is "excessive" movement — the larynx shooting up on high notes, causing tension and strain.

    How to Keep the Larynx Stable

  • Yawn feeling: Maintain a "half-yawn" sensation while singing to help keep the larynx in a lower position. But be careful: don't overdo the yawn, as it can cause excessive jaw dropping and tongue retraction, creating new problems
  • Lip trill exercises: Lip trills help the larynx stay stable across different pitches
  • "Goo" exercises: Sing scales on "Goo" — the "G" helps cord closure, the "oo" helps larynx stability
  • Don't force it down: Deliberately depressing the larynx creates a different kind of tension
